11 ways to say I love you

On Monday night February 14th of 2022 Vin Gogh hosted a live, in person, Valentine’s Paint and Sip event for a group of 11 couples. Ahhh people in the flesh, altogether, sharing a space, it was momentous and bound to be a fun time. We all needed it.

We have hosted at least 7 of these special V-day events and each and every one has been very festive, full of flowers, sparkles, hearts and especially this year, resplendent  with x’s and o’s. Did we mention charcuterie platters, prosecco, chocolate kisses, and paint. For weeks we feared the worst, (shut down) and of course hoped for the best (full house!) The Gods shone and COVID stayed away.

Over the years we have edited, refined and enthusiastically embraced the spirit of Valentine’s Day and our need to be with loved ones and share a very special evening embracing the theme full on.

I promised the 11 ways to say I love you and so let’s begin.

  1. Reserve your place early and let your partner know you have a plan.
  2. Dress up, show your shiny as a new penny self, in modern times since pennies don’t exist anymore, toonie shine.
  3. Book a driver, this says we are going to have a good time, and we are responsible.
  4. Show up!
  5. Arrive at Vin Gogh, hang up your partner’s coat, we are in Canada and February means it’s still cold, and that we haven’t moved to Mexico yet.
  6. Let your partner pick their seat, you are early and you have the choice of seating. Settle them in and perhaps lean down for a smooch or a nuzzle, and whisper this is going to be great.
  7. Grab a drink, you have 4 tickets, the world is your oyster. The prosecco and Chambord liquor is the special of the night.
  8. Charcuterie board is filled with delectables, specialty olives, mixed nuts and assorted cheeses flanking the prosciutto and salami menagerie. (no beer pong tonight)
  9. You have some homework to attend to, a card and pen are presented and now we ask that you write us your love story, your friendship tale, your connection, silly or utterly romantic, take some time to discuss what brought you together and here tonight if you want to take it that far (we approve of telling us how you found out about us)
  10. It’s time to paint and both of you have the task of painting each side of a heart which we get to connect at the end of the evening. Do you match up the centres right away or do you wait til the end? Will you tell your partner how to paint or lean over with encouraging whispers wow baby your colours are so powerful???
  11. As the paint night evolves, each story, of each couple, is read on stage, either it’s anon or you wave your arms enthusiastically. It’s your love story and isn’t it beautiful to hear aloud? You made this night so special, so loving and so sweet for each of you and for those in the room sharing the evening with you.

I can’t think of a better way of saying I love you, I care and respect you, we can have fun together in news ways, than having a memento of two halves of a heart joining together symbolizing the 11 ways you said I LOVE YOU.

All our Love, Vin Gogh.

Willingness to Share a message

Willingness to Explore new ideas

Willingness to accept new concepts

Willingness to enjoy a Mimosa, Coffee, Tea and a Muffin. (Chocolate, YUM) (at home)

Willingness to roll up their sleeves and get a little Dirty (at home)

No Surprises

Testimony from a former in-studio class

As the class kicked into gear, we were an unstoppable force, and activity reigned throughout the space. Everyone seemed to have their vision or partial vision as to what they wanted their message to be and some of the winners of the stencil selections were, I LOVE YOU TO THE MOON AND BACK, and I LOVE US. Love was definitely in the air. Must have been the Bride to Be, or the Mother and Daughter groups that were scattered throughout.

The true Sign was the Joy emanating from this dedicated group of Creators,  the Sign of this Time was the unlimited expression each participant let in.

Who wouldn’t want to be Loved to the Moon and Back, not me.

Paint Your Pet Fundraiser for Amigos de Animales

Paint Your Pet Fundraiser for Amigos de Animales

Paint your pet evening
On Friday, June 1st, Vin Gogh Paint & Sip Studio partnered with Amigos de Animales for a “Paint Your Pet” fundraiser. The Amigos de Animales team have hearts set to help stray dogs and cats, eliminate animal suffering, and to educate people about animal welfare, creating a mutual environment of compassion. Learn more about Amigos de Animales on their website.

Of course, we were more than thrilled to help Amigos de Animales! The fundraiser was a big success, having raised $1600 in one night through ticket sales, our drink special, donations, and raffle tickets. Every single penny will go toward food, medicine, daily spay and neutering, vet care, vaccinations and operation costs to run the safe house. Amigos de Animales now has over 57 animals in care. This includes kitties, cats, puppies and dogs. Every animal requires unique care as the rescues come to them emaciated, dehydrated, and full of infection.

Amigos de Animales is often looking for supplies and donations. If you feel led to help with this important cause, you can check out more information here.

On the Road Again

On the Road Again

When I was thinking about writing a blog about our Vin Gogh-go events, this song popped into my mind.

On the Road Again,  by Willie Nelson

The second lyric says it all.

“On the road again
Goin’ places that I’ve never been
Seein’ things that I may never see again
And I can’t wait to get on the road again”

When I am given a “GO” assignment, there are times when I know very little about the location or occasion and I kind of like it that way. I’ve gone to Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, and to all quadrants of Calgary, taught  as little as 10 people and up to 85 teachers. It’s a wide range of events and personalities.

On my way over to a GOGH site, I start to menatlly prepare for the coming hours, meeting the host, hostess, or the event coordinator, I also wonder about the size of the space and how close I will be to a water supply. A big deal!

When I arrive and unload the carefully packed containers of blank canvases, paint brushes, easels, paints and plastic table covering, along with the original painting, the most important piece, I start to feel the vibe of the location and begin to get to know this new, temporary, studio space. There is always a buzz in the air, a nervous giggle, a guest expresses to another, how stressed out she will be trying to paint, she hasn’t since she was 5 etc etc. Lots of banter back and forth and some express interest and are intrigued by the mystery of the process. “How can I possibly paint that Mountain Scene?” my reply “Don’t worry I will be there every step of the way.”

Once we are set up and everyone has found a spot, perhaps a glass of wine, (it is a lot about the sipping you know.) Normally, the first step is I take up the big brush and begin the process of painting the background in very loose broad strokes, explaining along the way that this gets us relaxed and in the groove for the rest of the session. I say, “Don’t be shy with the paint, load it up on that brush and let it do what it was born to do!”  (The last part I have never said before, but after writing this, I may try it out tomorrow night.)

Being a Vin Gogh Artist, is a training ground for stand up comedy and performance. It’s about loosening up the crowd, getting your audience comfortable and also being willing to receive whatever they come back at you with. I love having a mixed crowd of men and women. The men are usually the ones that get INTO IT! I had one gentleman say to his wife, I think I found my calling and will be switching professions. Her comeback was, honey I don’t think so, I am accustomed to this lifestyle.

There is a thrill every time as I see the paintings take shape, there is comfort in these spaces as there is usually a connection not found in the Studio experience, these new found artists are friends, relatives, maybe community members and this makes for much laughter and sharing. I tend to lift paintings to show the rest of the group to get the unsurprising and charming oohs and aahs.

As Willie keeps saying, “I just can’t wait to get on the road again.”
